Datsun India has updated its entry-level redi-GO hatchback with additional features for the model year 2019. The updated redi-GO is priced at a premium of about ₹ 7000 over the current version that starts at ₹ 2.68 lakh (ex-showroom, India). The new model adds both safety and convenience features without any changes to the mechanicals. The 2019 Datsun redi-GO gets ABS across all variants, while the driver side airbag is offered only on the range-topping trim. Expect the driver side airbag to be made standard soon though, while features like seatbelt reminder, high-speed warning and rear parking sensors could be added soon.

The 2019 Datsun redi-GO’s lower trims – T, T(O) and S – get central locking with remote lock, while the A variant gets power steering. Mechanically, the car remains unchanged and is offered with the 0.8-litre petrol engine that churns out 53 bhp and 72 Nm of peak torque, while paired with a 5-speed manual gearbox. There’s also the 1.0-litre petrol motor on offer with 67 bhp and 91 Nm of peak torque, which is paired with a 5-speed manual and AMT unit.

Apart from redi-GO, the Renault Kwid is the only model in this segment to get ABS as a standard feature. Both cars are underpinned by the same CMF-A platform and produced at the Renault-Nissan manufacturing facility in Oragadam, near Chennai. The Maruti Suzuki Alto is the best-seller in this space but only gets ABS in the top trims. Datsun redi GO Style

Visually, there are no changes made to the car, not even a badging that differentiates the manual version from the AMT. The equipment list also remains unchanged and there no exterior additions what so ever. It is based on the T(O) and S variant of the redi-GO, so you get all the top-end feature like the hexagonal grille with chrome surround, sweptback headlamps with integrated turn lights, LED daytime running light on the bumper, wheel cover, and body coloured bumpers and door handles. In fact, dimensionally the car remains unchanged so you still get the segment best and ground clearance of 185 mm, along with a total length of 3429 mm, a width of 1560 mm, and height of 1541 mm.

First impressions as you step into the cabin are pretty good. The high seats, combined with the expansive glass areas make the cabin airy. The dashboard is well designed, the plastics around the cabin are textured and the steering and gear-lever feel good to hold.

There’s a fixed air-con vent which sits atop of the central console and channels air to the rear. The adjustable AC vents on the driver and passenger side are similar to those seen on other Datsun cars. The audio system, unfortunately, isn’t a touchscreen unit like on the Renault Kwid. Instead, you get a CD and MP3 player, aux-in and USB connectivity, but there’s no Bluetooth. The instrument panel is the same unit as on its larger siblings, the Go and Go+, which includes a speedometer combined with a small orange digital display for the tachometer and trip computer which displays average mileage, fuel level, distance-to- empty and comes with a gear-shift indicator too.

In terms of storage spaces, there’s a large shelf on the passenger side, a roomy cubbyhole below the air-con controls and a smaller cubbyhole to the right of the steering wheel. You also get a cup-holder and a large bottle-holder in front of the gear lever and a flat tray under the handbrake. The small rear windscreen is also likely to create a blind spot while reversing. Datsun also claims that the Redigo comes with the best-in- class rear space and it just might be right. While knee-room is more than sufficient, the headroom is fantastic. The high ground clearance also makes getting in and out of the cabin easy while the seats, though a bit upright, are comfortable too. However, the relatively narrow width of the car makes three abreast seating a tight affair.

The Redigo gets a 222-litre boot, which isn’t the best in its segment, but is adequate. However, its high and narrow opening makes loading luggage into the boot quite a chore. There’s a plastic parcel tray, which adds a measure of convenience to the cabin. Unfortunately, it is obtrusively bolted to a supporting frame, which restricts flexibility.

For starters, Datsun has named its AMT unit ‘Smart Drive Auto’, unlike the Kwid AMT which gets Renault’s Easy-R system, but the differences are not just limited to the name. The biggest difference is that the redi-GO gets a conventional shifter. So there’s a lever instead of the rotary dial. Another key difference is the manual model, which will particularly come in handy when you want to overtake someone, or trying to go up-hill. This was one function that went missing in the Kwid. Lastly, unlike the Kwid AMT, the redi-GO’s AMT unit also gets the ‘creep’ function, which allows the car to cruise at low speeds of 5-6 kmph without you having to depress the accelerator, a smart feature to have in bumper to bumper traffic, in our opinion. In fact, Datsun has also given this a fancy name, and it calls it the ‘Rush Hour Mode’.

The Datsun redi-GO AMT gets the same 999 cc, three-cylinder petrol engine with Datsun’s i-SAT or Intelligent Spark Automated Technology. Power and torque figures also remain unchanged at 67 bhp and 91 Nm respectively. In fact, the car has been really well received in India, and Datsun says that over 30 per cent of the redi-GO sales come from the 1.0L model. Now, when we reviewed the manual version of the car, we had mentioned that the gearshifts are not seamless and lack feedback, sadly Datsun hasn’t addressed to those problems in the AMT version as well. In fact, we could hear gearshifts quite evidently. You can hear the engine rumble and it’s not quite above 3000 rpm, which points a finger to the NVH levels it has.

There was need of some low-end torque, but once you are above the 2nd gear, and have crossed the 4,000 rpm mark, power and torque gradually come into play and that’s when the redi-GO AMT is in its zone. It’s happy, peppy and fun. Of course, if you try and hurry and floor the accelerator, well, the AMT takes some time to respond and that’s a very noticeable lag. This is where the manual mode comes in handy. Shift the lever to the left and now you can toggle it up and down to downshift and upshift. In the manual mode, the car feels a little more responsive and allows you to manoeuvre more quickly. Also, if you are not in the right gear you’ll hear a continuous beeping sound with an indication on the instrument cluster.

The ride and handling of the car hasn’t changed compared to the redi-GO 1.0L manual version. The suspension is still a bit on the stiffer side, so you do feel the undulation on the road and the small thuds can be heard inside the cabin. The steering is light and it helps in city traffic conditions but doesn’t impart a lot of confidence when you are on the highway doing high speeds. The shorter turning radius is a big help when it comes to taking tight turns within the city and around traffic and just helps you squeeze out of the small alleys. You also sit tall inside the redi-GO which offers a good field of view when you are driving and even the brakes are pretty good and offer enough bite and stopping power.

The top-end variant of New Datsun Redi-GO features driver side airbags as well, which makes for a very good offer in this segment. Along with this, the car gets disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear to give the driver a confident drive.As for safety, an optional driver-side airbag will be offered on the top-spec Redigo, but there will be no ABS. Also note that rear passengers only get static seatbelts, which need to be manually adjusted. Up front, the skinny seats are reasonably comfortable, and offer the driver and the front passenger a good view out. The front seats are not adjustable for height and neither is the steering for rake or reach.

We think that 2016 Datsun Redi-GO has the potential to challenge the competitors but the maintenance costs can pose a challenge. The car looks smart and different with its “tall boy” design, and is comfortable on the inside in the front seats. Let’s keep an eye on how far this takes the Datsun Redi-GO.New Datsun Redi-GO competes with the likes of Maruti Alto 800, Hyundai Eon, Renault Kwid, etc. The Datsun car is lighter and powerful than the others but in terms of features, Renault Kwid takes the cake. For all those who have been waiting for a BIG family car at not a very BIG price, Datsun has a fresh new offering – the Go+. They made a humble start with Go hatchback and are still very young to be taking competition by its horns.

Bringing back simplicity in design and offering more than others in the segment, the Go+ is more for the weekend seekers. It fits the MPV type with an additional third row seat, which will see more of luggage bags tucked than passengers.

Datsun wants you to think of it as a smart family wagon, which can take care of all your BIG family car needs. They have managed to squeeze an extra seat, give more space and features and almost everything without going generous in length by sticking to the sub-4-meter mandate. How good is it in real? Datsun GO+ Exteriors

The first thing that you notice about the GO+ is that the car looks a lot sharper than before. The alterations aren’t the kind that many will pick up on immediately, but enough to tell the new car apart from the old model. The grille is now bigger than before and, along with the strong creases on the bonnet, the car has a more aggressive presence.

The headlamps too have been given a mild update but continue to feature conventional bulbs. Complementing this look is the new bumper which features a lot of sharp creases towards the sides. It also houses new vertically stacked LED DRLs, which is further highlighted by the black surrounds. These LED DRLs don’t look like an afterthought and are bright enough to catch the eye.

From the side, the GO+ looks almost identical to the previous version. However, there are a few minor changes to make the styling easier on the eyes. The ORVMs now get a body-coloured casing, while the wheels are now dual-tone diamond-cut alloys. Not only have they been styled differently, they are bigger and wider now – 165/70 R14 when compared to the older 155/70 R13 wheels.

The Datsun GO+ now looks better from the rear as well. The creases on the bumper towards the edges help give the car a greater sense of width. The bottom crease of the bumper, which looks like a lip extension, is a neat touch. Additionally, you also get a rear windscreen washer and wiper as well.While the GO+ was never a bad looking car, it was rather simple. With a few tweaks and tucks in the facelift though, it looks more attention-grabbing.

Datsun GO+ Interiors

The insides of the GO and GO+ is a big step up over the old car. It actually gives you an impression of sitting inside a different car altogether. Gone is the crude dashboard of the old car and it is replaced by a thoroughly modern looking one. The hexagonal center console that is bordered by silver finish, looks attractive and the new 7-inch infotainment system lends it a modern look. The only difference between the Go and Go+ on the inside is the dual tone white and black dashboard on the latter which makes it feel even more airy. Welcome addition come in form of a glovebox (the old car had no closed storage) and they have also got rid of the old-school pull-type handbrake for a conventional one. There are plenty of storage spaces upfront – you get big door pockets, two cup holders, a big glovebox and two small cubbies next to the steering column. People sitting in the back aren’t that lucky as they only get slim seat back pockets as storage option. Surprisingly there isn’t a rear parcel shelf even in the top variant. Overall quality has improved drastically over the old car but you will still find some rough edges. You still find uneven panel gaps both in and out and stuff like the exposed metal lever for seat adjust doesn’t shout quality.

In terms of space, both cars remain unchanged. But thankfully they have ditched the bench seat upfront for two separate bucket seats. As a result they offer better bolstering and the lack of centre cushioning has also freed up some storage spaces. Although better, the seats are still a bit flat and don’t offer much lateral support. You also don’t get driver seat height adjust or steering adjust. Yet the driving position is quite good as you sit at a good height and the non-adjustable steering and the pedals are placed ideally for most heights. The large windows all-round gives good visibility, which is a boon while driving on crowded roads.

At the back you get the same flat yet wide bench, which can accommodate three in decent comfort but, what could have made it even better is a bit more knee-room. The bench itself offers good back support and there is more than enough headroom on offer. Like the front even at the rear you get fixed headrests, but they are placed low and won’t really help in avoiding whiplash injuries in case of a rear impact. Our test car came with faux leather seat covers which won’t be part of the standard equipment. The USP of the Go + is that its the cheapest seven seater you can buy. The third-row though is cramped and best used as added luggage space.

The Go offers generous boot space at 256 litres, while the bigger Go+ has 347 litres with the third-row folded. While the Go can easily take weekends worth of luggage, the Go+ offers practicality as good as some estates. You can also fold the middle-row on the Go+ which gives and a humongous loading bay that is good enough even when you are shifting houses.

As compared to the earlier car, the new Datsun Go comes with additional features like Keyless entry, tachometer, a trip computer, a high-quality 7 inch capacitive touchscreen infotainment system that is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto enabled, all four power windows(old car just came with powered front windows)and electrically adjustable ORVMs in the T variant. In the top T option variant you get stuff like 14 inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lamps and rear wash and wipe over the T variant. The good news continues, as Datsun now is offering two airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist as standard across the range.

Datsun GO+ Performance

The Datsun GO+ continues to be powered by the same 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine as before and there is no diesel motor on offer. This engine produces 68PS and 104Nm of torque. For more information on Datsun GO+ check Ubvvn

While the output figures haven’t been altered with the update, Datsun’s engineers have made revisions to the gear ratios of the 5-speed manual box in order to improve driveability. As a result, the car still feels peppy, with the engine pulling strongly from 2000rpm onwards. Of course, this isn’t a car meant for pleasing the enthusiasts, but with a claimed 0-100kmph time of 13.3 seconds, the GO+ is supposedly as quick as the Ignis petrol AMT. We’ll put the car through a road test to verify these figures.

However, it does look like the added weight has had an impact on the driveability of the GO+, even with the altered gearbox ratios. It’ll still pick up from 30kmph in fourth gear without the engine knocking, but there is a l-o-n-g wait before the speedometer starts to climb again. This becomes apparent when the car is running on a full load, forcing you to provide a heavy throttle input to get going. As expected, the powertrain’s tuning is primarily for city commuting.

On the highway, it’ll click 100kmph but does run out of breath if you try to make it go much faster. High speed overtakes also require some planning. Overall, though, the Go+ still retains its capabilities as a daily driver. At 19.83kmpl, the claimed fuel efficiency is now slightly lower than before but still very impressive standalone.

Datsun GO+ Driving

Despite its budget credentials the ride quality on the Go and Go+ is actually quite good. It mostly feels supple and the dampers do a good job of keeping the car settled even on uneven road surfaces. Where the Go struggles a bit is over sharp bumps where the suspension tends to crash and at highway speeds there is some up and down motion over undulating surfaces. At slow speeds the Go or the Go+ is extremely easy to drive thanks to the great visibility and light steering. But it isn’t a sporty car and it rolls quite a bit when you start cornering enthusiastically. It not having an antiroll bar doesn’t help its cause, nor does the steering which isn’t direct and has quite a bit of dead-zone around the centre ahead position. Drive it in an unhurried manner, then the Go feels well planted with safe and predictable manners. The brakes do a good job of stopping the car and the added safety net of standard ABS boosts confidence further.

Datsun GO+ Safety

It’s good to finally see Datsun taking some action to improve its notoriety when it comes to safety in India. For starters, the structure of the GO+ has received a good deal of reinforcement. In the process, it has gained about 150kg in weight and Datsun claims the GO+ will comply with the upcoming Indian crash test norms.

What’s more, not only do you now get dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, brake assist and rear parking sensors, all these features are included as standard even in the base variant. Yes, follow-me-home headlamps are also included as standard. Buyers of the top-spec T, T(O) variants get an additional Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) which is essentially electronic stability control (ESC).

Datsun GO+ Conclusion

The Go+ is more of a station wagon than an MPV because the last row seats realistically do not qualify to seat occupants. The main challenge that Datsun will face is convincing consumers about the merits of one. Tata Estate, Indigo Marina, Baleno Altura, Corsa Swing and Octavia Combi are some of the many cars which couldn’t do well in India as the concept of a weekend car didn’t exist back then. With the Go+, Datsun can pitch a budget family wagon and create a new segment.

The Go and Go+ still have a long way to go in terms of final finishing as the cost conscious measures seep in every detail of both these cars. The build quality is not the best and even the interiors feel too basic compared to competing models. However, it is just the beginning for the Japanese car major and we hope the future iterations will come in a more acceptable form.

The ‘Datsun’ brand has a strong history behind it especially in the 60s and 70s. Car lovers can vouch for the same. This Japanese automobile company has produced some of the most popular cars of its times including the 510 and 240Z. Nissan had announced Datsun’s revival plans in 2012 for many developing countries and going by the rapid development, India played an important role in it. Datsun’s operations will be supported by Nissan in India. The company has already shown GO hatchback and Go+ MPV based on the same platform at the 12th Auto Expo held in Greater Noida.

The Go hatchback promises to offer more benefits than any other car in its segment. With the Go, Datsun plans to lock horns with India’s largest car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki. Datsun is very positive about Go’s premium styling and spacious interiors and claims that it will fetch every need possible without making consumers pay extra. Datsun GO Space

The cabin has some striking resemblances to that of Micra. The Go’s cabin does not feel like a cocoon and instead offers a spacious well spread cabin with ergonomically placed buttons and knobs. The entire arrangement looks very simple and functional. In terms of features, it gets a MDS – Mobile Docking Station mounted on the front dashboard. It looks simple but has its high points considering Indian consumers are fast moving towards smartphones. There is a USB charging slot and a AUX input which can pair with a smartphone and play music, navigate or even take calls depending on the features of the Smartphone.

The driver gets a big three spoke steering wheel which offers adequate grip. The instrumental cluster has an analog speedometer and a digital tachometer. It also shows information on average fuel consumption, low fuel warning and distance to empty. To help reduce fuel consumption it also comes with a gear shift guide which aids the driver to shift gears at correct engine speeds.The gear stick has been smartly shifted from the floor to the dashboard. It is very conveniently positioned and is in very easy reach of the driver. The change in position of the gear stick makes the seating very spacious. But on the flip side it keeps touching the knee of taller front passengers.

The cabin space inside the Go cannot be compared to any other car because of the sheer space offered. The legroom and headroom inside the cabin is fantastic. The base variants will get plain fabric upholstery while the premium variant gets Jacquard fabric upholstery which has a special pattern on it. The seats are bench type and Datsun claims that the front seats have been specially designed to keep the fatigue level low. The rear seats have a flat rear support and can do with some more cushioning. Both row seats come with integrated headrest.

It features an open glove box section which is not very useful considering the lack of a cover. Since the handbrake and the gear stick have been shifted to the console, it leaves the front area with some storage space. This can be used to store bags and mats and are at an easy disposal of the driver. The Go has the best boot space in its class at 265 Litres.

The Datsun GO is powered by the same engine as before i.e. the 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol unit which produces 68PS and 104Nm of torque. However, Datsun’s engineers have made revisions to the gear ratios of the 5-speed manual box, which could have been done to manage the higher kerb weight. As a result, the car still feels peppy, with the engine pulling strongly from 2000rpm onwards. Datsun claims the GO can complete the 0-100kmph run in just 13.3 seconds. However, what’s been affected by the few extra kilos is the drivability. Datsun GO Driving

The Datsun GO gets a 10mm bump in ground clearance (now 180mm) thanks to the larger 14-inch wheels. This has also lead to a slightly different suspension setup, which, in this case, is better than before. The suspension takes on speed breakers and undulations with ease, cushions you well. This characteristic is even retained at higher speeds, as the car remains stable over broken roads and bad patches. What’s even more impressive is that the car is quick to settle down after hitting a pothole or bump. At triple digit speeds, though, it does feel a bit bouncy, but that’s something which is common across this category of cars.

Although engine noise is better insulated than before, the floorboard insulation still feels lacking as even the smallest pebble hit makes a sharp noise inside the cabin. Overall, the NVH levels have been improved to a point where it is now acceptable. As far as handling is concerned, it’s a car best suited for city use. The steering is light and lets you make quick turns or u-turns in traffic. However, the feedback from the unit feels a bit vague at high speeds and sudden lane changes doesn’t inspire much confidence. A slightly heavier steering would have gone a long way to help with that.

The Datsun GO features safety bits such as driver side airbag, vehicle dynamic control, co-passenger airbag, ABS with EBD and brake assist, rear parking sensors, central locking and driver seatbelt warning as standard across the line-up. Datsun GO Conclusion

Should you write a cheque in favour of Datsun GO? You might want to read this. Among some of the low scoring points in the GO, the external tail door lock has been ditched which makes it very inconvenient to operate. There is no wiper on the tail door. Inside the cabin, the ORVM adjustment is missing and also the central mirror has no anti-glare setting.

Glove box does not get a lid for now. No array of power window buttons on the driver door trim. The most annoying bit for me has to be the vintage hand break lever. Get your muscles in place to pull this lever and disengaging it can cause serious injury on the knee as it descends abruptly if not held properly.

But then on the high side, you get a fresh looking car with an attractive design, spacious and functional interiors and an efficient engine.
