Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS Overview
Maruti is stepping up their game in the Indian market and of late they have been pushing the envelope in various new dimensions. The carmaker introduced their premium NEXA brand having niche products to taste the higher end of the mass market segment. Maruti recently experimented a different design direction with the launch of the Ignis targeting millennials and now they are finally entering the performance oriented segment. Yes, we are talking about the new Baleno RS that comes with a brand new BoosterJet engine. We just drove the hot hatch at the Buddh International Circuit, testing the limits of the 1.0-litre turbo petrol motor. The RS moniker here stands for ‘Road Sport’ and we see if the first performance-centric hatch from Maruti justifies the RS badge. Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS Style
Maruti impressed their Indian customers when they introduced the Baleno last year. The car is based on a completely new lightweight platform and looked completely different from any other Maruti products. Maruti claims that the Baleno hatchback is a premium offering and thus gets many bold design elements. The new Baleno with its ‘liquid flow’ design language puts the car in the same league of some other premium hatchbacks like the Hyundai Elite i20 and the Fiat Punto Evo.
Just like the Baleno hatchback, the Baleno RS carries forwards the same V-shaped grille which gets some chrome elements which makes it look slightly more aggressive. The Baleno RS also feature a slightly sportier front bumper as well with lots of Black elements on them. The front bumper also houses round shaped fog lamps as well with chrome accents. Just like the front profile the side profile now gets flared wheel arches and slightly bigger alloy wheels to make things sportier while it will also feature a slightly aggressive body kit as well in the form of an extra side skirt. Just like the front profile the rear profile of the Baleno RS too feature a slightly tweaked bumper to go well with the overall aggressive design.
Although there are no major changes made to the overall design but according to Maruti, they have strengthened the chassis to go well with the more powerful and heavier engine. As a result, the car is now heavier than the standard Baleno hatchback.
You won’t notice many changes on the inside as the interiors are identical. The all black theme of the dashboard and upholstery continues. The instrument cluster is carried over having a TFT display that comes with torque and power graphics, fuel economy details, time, outside temperature, driving time, etc. The Smartplay touchscreen infotainment system comes with Apple CarPlay connectivity and features such as navigation system, rear parking camera display, etc. Some of the key features include keyless entry and go with push button start, follow me home headlamps, auto AC, front centre armrest and more.
The fit and finish feels long lasting and the cabin offers good ergonomics. The seats are comfortable and there is more than enough space both at the front and for the rear passengers. All in all, from the inside, the Baleno RS feels pretty much the same. Maruti could have offered some sporty elements to differentiate such as red accents, redesigned steering wheel, sporty gear knob, aluminium pedals, etc. to differentiate the interior layout from the regular Baleno.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS Engine
The Baleno RS comes powered by a smaller yet more powerful 101bhp 1.0-litre BoosterJet engine unlike the conventional 1.2-litre one. This new three-cylinder engine isn’t as smooth as the four-cylinder one, but is still refined. Unless you rev it above 2,000rpm, you won’t hear the throaty sound. This is also when you will experience its healthy acceleration. There’s a fixed-geometry turbo-charger, but Maruti has done a fantastic job in reducing the turbo lag. So what you have is a nice linear power delivery. This combined with a smooth five-speed gearbox and light clutch ensured that I didn’t have a tiring drive even on crowded roads of Mumbai. There’s 150Nm of torque available from 2,500rpm, meaning I could drive the RS easily at slower speeds in higher gears too. A downshift only provided me an excellent pickup to go past cars in a jiffy.Furthermore, the light steering makes it enjoyable to drive the car.
The Baleno RS weighs just 970kg making it a lightweight car in its segment. With such great drivability, we weren’t really expecting a high fuel efficiency. But, by offering 13.8kmpl in bumper-to-bumper traffic conditions, the Baleno RS has left me amazed. I have very rarely managed to get anywhere close to these figures in my Jazz or Amaze under the same conditions.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS Rideing
Maruti has also strengthened the chassis for the additional support however like we already mentioned above the overall kerb weight of the hatchback is also more than the standard Baleno hatch. To make the ride sportier Maruti has also retuned the suspension setup for a stiffer setting. The RS variant also gets additional rear disc brakes which definitely will improve the cars overall stopping power.
Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS Safety
Maruti is offering the Baleno RS in a single variant and hence the car is loaded with top spec safety features as standard such as dual front airbags, ABS, EBD and ISOFIX child seat provision. Additionally, the Baleno RS comes with all-four discs for better stopping power. In terms of after sales, we all know that Maruti has a very renowned and wide network across the country. The NEXA channel is growing with each passing day and the ownership cost of the Baleno RS will definitely be the lowest compared to the other performance hatchbacks in this segment.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno RS Conclusion
This is definitely the most important part of any overview article when it looks bit confusing. So now the question arises will you spend all those extra money to get your hands on the more powerful 1.0 Litre Boosterjet unit which produces slightly more power than the 1.2 Litre unit powering the standard car. Well! Why Not? The 1.0 Litre Boosterjet unit certainly does not provide enough power but atleast this car surely returns an impressive overall fuel efficiency. So by paying that entire additional amount you do get a slightly more fuel efficient engine which also promises slightly better power output.
