BMW X1 Overview

BMW X1 is a big and powerful looking car that has sturdy build and offers off-road capabilities too. BMW X1 new model released during Auto Expo 2016 is an amazing amalgamation of class and style. It falls in the well above 4-meter category and has amazing features that compare well with its rivals in this price range. This muscular looking SUV has 2670mm of wheelbase that allows it to seat around five passengers comfortably. BMW X1 Style

The BMW X1 is offered with the signature kidney shaped radiator grille, LED headlamps with LED DRLs (Daytime Running Lamps), cornering lights and adaptive light distribution. The rear LED tail lights have a 3D design. It also has rain sensor and automatic driving lights. The ORVMs (Outside Rear View Mirrors) come with an automatic anti-dazzle, parking function and can be electrically adjusted or folded. The twin exhaust tail pipe has a chrome finish.

The new X1 is certainly a lot more butch than before, and has increased road presence thanks to its flared wheel arches, large signature kidney grille, and the new, angular, twin circular full-LED headlamps. We drove the M Sport version, which looked especially imposing sitting on its 18-inch wheels. Also, to ensure that people know that you’re driving the M Sport variant, it’s got badging on both front doors. And, for a personal high, the M insignia is also visible on the steering wheel. The gorgeous Estoril Blue colour certainly makes the X1 stand out from the crowd, although it’s only available in the M-Sport version.

BMW X1 Space

Step inside, and the first thing you notice is that the BMW X1 is now a lot more luxurious than before. The new 8.7-inch display on the centre of the dashboard catches your attention. Though it doesn’t slide into the dash like the Audi Q3, it still looks stylish and comes with a nice metallic border. It is, of course, equipped with the iDrive infotainment system, as well as navigation. What’s disappointing, though, is that the X1 doesn’t come with a reverse camera – something that’s present even in many small hatchbacks today. Truly inexcusable!

One major upgrade from the previous X1, though, is that the cabin is now far more spacious – even though the new model is slightly shorter in length. The headroom has increased by 53mm, but the biggest improvement is the knee room for the rear passengers – which has increased by 37mm. The rear seats are quite versatile too, as they’re split-folding and also slide forwards and backwards. And one has to compliment BMW for crafting very comfortable front and rear seats. The contours of the seats provide ample back and side support. Also the driving position has vastly improved, as the space in the front has increased by 36mm (as compared with 64mm in the rear). All told, these are certainly some of the best seats in this segment.

BMW X1 Engine

All BMW X1 reviews by auto journalist state the fact that it has a powerful BMW TwinPower Turbo diesel engine that gets an all-wheel drive system in the top trims of this car model. The 2.0-litre diesel motor has four cylinders with 16 valves. It has a total displacement of 1995cc and churns out 190bhp at 4000rpm and yield torque of 400Nm ranging between 1750 to 2500rpm. The powertrain is coupled to an 8-speed steptronic automatic sport transmission gearbox that drives power to all its wheels.BMW X1 Mileage according to ARAI standard is 20.68kmpl.

The BMW X1 is available with one engine option, a 1,995cc BMW TwinPower Turbo 4-cylinder diesel engine. It generates 190 hp of power at 4,000 rpm and 400 Nm of torque between 1,750 rpm and 2,500 rpm. The engine has been tuned for the best balance between performance and fuel efficiency. The BMW X1 is offeredwith an 8 speed Steptronic automatic ‘Sport’ transmission with Launch control and paddle shifters. The transmission offers smooth gear changes and the well tuned ratios offer a good balance between fuel efficiency and performance.

BMW X1 Driving

The ride of the old X1 was a bit crashy and a bit on the hard side but the new X1 takes care of that part as its much better now. The ride over bumps and potholes is much better though it is still not the best riding car in its class. One thing is the lack of refinement as the new X1 feels noisyThe powerful 1995cc mill along with the 8-speed transmission gearbox gives the SUV enormous power that allows it to reach its top speed of 219kmph in no time. The pickup is also smooth and it crosses 100kmph from standstill in just 7.6 seconds. For a bump free ride, it has an advanced M Sports suspension system that keeps the car running smoothly even on uneven roads.

BMW X1 Safety

In terms of safety, BMW X1 comes with DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), CBC (Corner Braking Control), ABS (Anti lock Braking System) with brake assist and airbags. It also has an electronic vehicle immobiliser and crash sensor along with side impact protection and runflat tyres with reinforced side walls.

BMW X1 Conclusion

After driving the all-new X1, it’s obvious that BMW completely shredded the architecture of the first generation X1 and started working on this new model from scratch. It’s now more luxurious, fully loaded with features, and definitely looks much better than before – and the M-Sport kit makes it a lot more desirable. Also the cabin is now more spacious and the seats are simply phenomenal. Even the ride quality is now more suited to our road conditions. And so, starting at `29.90 lakhs, ex-showroom, Delhi, the new X1 should give Audi and Mercedes-Benz some sleepless nights as this new kid on the block certainly means business. Unfortunately, this model with the M-Sport kit is prohibitively expensive – which is a shame because it truly looks the business!
