Quality levels immediately feel a notch up over the old model with the plastics now being soft touch. Without doubt the new dashboard bring a dose of freshness to the Linea. The design is well executed and has an Italian feel. The use of colours is also well done, with the top of the dashboard getting black colour while the centre uses light beige (with an interesting pattern) and glossy black finish used on the centre console and audio system. The instrument cluster is all new as well, taken heavy inspiration from the now defunct Bravo. The new cluster has large pods for the speedometer and tachometer (with smaller ones for the temperature and fuel gauges) with a large rectangular display in between for the multi-information system (which shows an array of data) and other tell-tale functions. At first glance, the cluster doesn’t appear as easy to read on the move as the one on the old Linea but with time it grows on you. The Fiat Linea has always come loaded and the new model isn’t any different. In fact Fiat has only added features like the top-end variant now gets Cruise Control, a feature of not much use in India. Other features include dual airbags, ABS, leather seats, rear windshield curtain, automatic headlights and wipers (standard on all variants), 16-inch alloy wheels (15-inch on the lower trims), reverse parking sensors (which don’t beep right into your right ear like on the old model), Bluetooth audio system with good sound output, etc. Space inside the cabin is almost unaffected and you continue to get decent interior room with all seats offering good all round support but rear legroom is just about average. The AC chills in no time and we particularly like the way the AC vents are shaped in the new model. The glove box is all new as well and is decently big with a cooling function which has a light and two separate compartments (USB port has been shifted out). The steering wheel is among the few parts on the dashboard which has been carried over from the old car but we aren’t complaining as the steering is one of the best to hold with the right contours. The boot space is decent but ironically the Emotion variant which comes with 205/55/16 alloys comes with a 195/60/15 steel rim space saver.

The Linea 125 S is powered the same 1.4-litre turbo-petrol T-Jet engine as before, though its different state of tune results in an increased power rating of 125hp as compared to the earlier cars 114hp. The manner of delivery of this power, however, is the real highlight, the engine has enough low-range torque to allow you to potter about town comfortably and post the 2,000 rpm mark things really pick up robustly all the way up to 6500rpm, with power delivered in a linear and continuous fashion. Engine noise is well-contained at lower revs, and though you can hear it at higher revs, it is not unpleasant or unbearable.The rev-happy engine should have been complemented with a better gearbox. The hydraulic steering has a nice, old-school feel to it, and it sends a good amount of feedback your way. The cabin is the place where there are more chances of sealing the deal. And since Ertiga is known for its sheer practicality, it would be better to start with the practical aspects of the car. The interior beige interiors lends a sense of roominess inside augmented by massive glass area so much so that one would find it difficult to differentiate between a windshield and the second row door window. All the three rows can be reclined along with adjustable headrests functionality, and this comes as standard. Pretty cool!

Egress especially for the elderly would be more convenient as the floorpan is quite low and the middle door looks like a gate. Coming to the cabin space, each row can absorb adults, even 6-footers but the second row is little constricted but still usable, however. While comparing to the older Ertiga, there is not much difference in terms of space in the first and second row, but the third row does have improved shoulder, head and kneeroom. This also makes the second generation Ertiga more of a true 7-seater MPV. This brings us to the quality of the auto AC unit which is fortunately doesn’t look like an aftermarket fitment while the AC vents are styled like those we have seen in Audi cars. The SmartPlay infotainment unit is the same unit working in other Maruti cars and it works pretty well. Then there is solid looking flat-bottomed steering wheel with smoothly finished wooden inserts reflects the effort of the carmaker towards making a special car. The dashboard is fresh unlike the earlier one which was a straight lift from Swift. Though, the interiors of the car are upmarket, the plastic quality is average and it’s nothing great when it comes to fit and finish.

The ‘second generation’ tag comes with some speciality and it can be seen in first in class ventilated cupholders, colour multi-information display and 12V charging sockets for all the three rows. The new MID with coloured TFT which is also working in the new Ciaz features tachometer and gives relevant vehicle information including gear shift indicator, digital clock, outside temperature, distance to empty and fuel consumption. The car also get a big boot space of 209L with all the seats occupied while folding third and second row can expand the boot space to 550L and 803L respectively. The third row also has reclining feature that allows you to adjust between the passenger comfort and luggage space. Though the car is feature loaded with aspects such as push engine start/stop switch, electrically adjustable/foldable ORVM and automatic climate control, there are some misses. The car does not have auto headlamps, no steering reach adjustment while the cruise control is also missing, may be the company wanted to keep the price tag within the reach of the middle income families. Overall, the carmaker has done a pretty decent job in enhancing the cabin comfort and space in the new Ertiga.

There are no changes under the hood as well, the petrol variant of the Ertiga remains to be powered by the 1.4-litre K-series petrol engine which is capable of producing about 68 KW of peak power at 6,000 rpm and 130 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm. The diesel engine, on the other hand, is powered by 1.3 Litre DDiS 200 diesel unit which also gets mild hybrid technology, this engine is capable of producing about 66 KW of peak power at 4000 rpm and 200 Nm of torque at 1750 rpm. Both the engines are paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. While the petrol variant claims to return 17.5 kmpl, the diesel variant claims 24.52 kmpl of fuel efficiency respectively.

The car retains the diesel engine while the petrol engine is brand new. But irrespective of the old and new engines, the claimed fuel efficiency has gone up in the new Ertiga due to variety of factors including 20kgs less weight and mild-hybrid technology. At first glance it is easy to see what inspired the designers of the Compass – its bigger brother, the Grand Cherokee; this is especially obvious when you look at it from the front. But apart from that, the Compass has its own identity.

The Jeep Compass looks tough but also premium. It looks modern, no doubt, but the squared off edges give it some old-school charm, ensuring a look that says SUV, not crossover. At the front, the highlights include the wide swath of black that stretches from one headlight to the other – including the modern take on Jeep’s iconic 7-slat (chrome lines) grille. The headlamps have a white element in them which help them pop out – an almost animalistic ‘eyes’ look, according to Jeep’s lead designer Mark Allen. They also contain LED guide lights, these are not DRLs – the actual DRLs actually sit on the bumper, just above the fog lamps. The clamshell hood is sculpted, with a slight power bulge in the middle, but the lines on it don’t scream aggression – Jeep wanted the Compass to look more inviting.

The Jeep logo sits on the bonnet, just above the grille. A small horizontal slat-like grille on the painted part of the bumper helps break the huge swath between the main grille and air dam, it also directs air towards the radiator. The air dam is as wide as the main grille and taller – it adds to the muscular look at the front. A chrome lip at the bottom of the air dam adds a bit of bling.

The bulk of the Compass is actually hidden well thanks to the use of a thick black cladding that goes all around the car. The Jeep-signature trapezoidal wheel arches contain the 17-inch silver alloy wheels shod with Firestone 225/60 section all-weather tyres. If you feel the need for larger wheels, the Compass Limited Plus gets a set of 18-inch dual-tone wheels that add to the road presence of the car. Surface detailing like the lines over the wheel arches, the prominent line that passes through the door handles onto the taillamps etc. make the compact SUV exciting to look at. The crowning jewel of the design here is the chrome line that separates the contrast-painted roof from the rest of the body – this line goes all the way from one outside rearview mirror (ORVM), over the windows, swoops down under the rear windshield, up over the windows on the other side to finally end at the other ORVM. The roof line seems to flow down towards the rear, while the windowline rises up, adding a kink at the very end of the windowline and the C-pillar looks like – according to Jeep – a shark fin! The roof rails and the spoiler do not stand out too much. But what does stand out is the panoramic sunroof that’s offered exclusively with the Compass Limited Plus. Besides being feature that’s nice to have, it makes the SUV look more upmarket.

At the rear, the design of the Compass becomes a bit sedate. Highlights here include the wraparound rear windshield with the chrome line running across its base, a two-part taillamps which consists of a prominent LED guide-light (mimicking the units in the headlamps), a slightly recessed number plate holder and a two part bumper with integrated fog lamps. The Jeep logo sits on a carved out recess just below the windshield, a unique touch.

Look all around and the Jeep Compass feels solid, the panel gaps are consistent and the paint quality is impressive. The Jeep Compass is offered in five colour options – Exotic Red, Brilliant Black, Minimal Grey, Vocal White and Hydro Blue (the colour of the car you see in the pictures).

Use the sensors on the front door handles to open the Compass, pull the handle and swing open the well weighted door and you are greeted by a dual-tone cabin. The black-and-almost-white interiors look inviting, but the lighter coloured parts will get soiled easily. At the presentation before the first drive, Jeep officials also displayed the Compass’ cabin with a sporty all-black theme, which includes red inserts/highlights. Many expected this to be offered with the Compass Limited Plus, but for now, this cabin theme is off the table. We may, however, get to see this in the TrailHawk.

Survey the dashboard from the firm but comfortable seats and you notice that it is a bit cluttered towards the driver’s side. Most of the surfaces on the inside feature soft touch materials; be it the dashboard, the armrests on the door pads, the centre armrests, the floor-mounted centre console, etc. The buttons, be it the power window switches on the door pads, multi-function buttons on the steering wheel or the buttons to control the climate control system are soft-to-touch and feel premium.

The cluster placed just under the touchscreen consists of dials and buttons to control the infotainment system and the dual-zone climate control and is a bit cluttered. Lower down the centre console, the Compass has USB and Aux-in ports, a charging port and a rotary knob to control the ‘Selec Terrain’ traction modes.

At first glance, the obvious signs of cost-cutting include the 7-inch infotainment screen on the centre console, dummy buttons on the steering wheel and the manually dimming interior rearview mirror. However, Jeep has addressed two of the three misses, with its new top-end variant. While a larger, 8.4-inch unit was available only in markets overseas initially, the larger screen is now offered in the range-topping Compass Limited Plus. An auto-dimming interior rearview mirror is also available with the top-spec Compass.Unfortunately, these upgrades are offered only with the top-end model, so some cons of the lower grades still remain.

The ‘uconnect’ infotainment system with the 7-inch touchscreen does not feel top notch to use. While the touchscreen is responsive, the system seems to be laggy. We were able to check the Android Auto system built into the infotainment system and experienced mixed results; while it worked perfectly at certain moments – responding to voice commands, reading out Whatsapp messages etc, and other times it simply refused to respond to simple requests through the touchscreen – through an almost three hour long drive, it seemed to think everyone in the car only loved songs from Indian Ocean and refused to change playlists/albums. The icons on the screen could have been bigger for better usability. Apart from the usual FM/AM/USB/Aux-in/Bluetooth connectivity options, the system is also Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compliant. The system plays through a six-speaker setup which sounds good, changing the equaliser settings make discernable changes to the sound quality.

Getting into the Compass may not be easy for everyone, thanks to the tall door sills. Once inside, the front bucket seats feel nice to sit in; they are firm but comfortable and wide enough to accommodate even someone of a bigger build. The under thigh support is especially amazing. The driver seat can be adjusted for height too. While the seats are manually adjustable in the other variants, the Compass Limited Plus offers an 8-way power adjustable seat along with 4-way power lumbar support and memory.

The steering is adjustable for both reach and rake, the leather-covered chunky rim feels good to hold and the thumb indents are also nice. The dummy buttons on the right spoke on this three-spoke unit are an eyesore. These black spaces could have been used to house the controls for the infotainment system; the volume and mode control buttons are placed behind the steering wheel, which you may not be able to find unless someone tells you they are there!

Move to the second row seats and you realise that the Compass is strictly a four-seater. It doesn’t feel wide enough to allow three adults to sit beside each other in absolute comfort over longer journeys – the middle passenger does not get a three-point seat belt or a headrest and he/she would also have to deal with a large hump in the centre and the A/C vent module. There is enough cabin space to seat four 6 footers comfortably; with enough legroom, knee room and headroom for all passengers.

For a car of this size, the boot space is quite average too. At 438 litres, it betters the Hyundai Creta (402 litres) but is far behind the Hyundai Tucson’s 530 litres. Figures aside, in isolation, the Compass’ boot feels underserved and the family’s luggage will sit snugly over weekend trips.

When it is launched, the Jeep Compass will be offered with two engines, both with 4×2 and 4×4 options. The petrol variant will run a 1.4-litre Multiair turbo-petrol engine with the choice of a 6-speed manual and dual-clutch transmissions. The diesel variant, which is the one we’ve driven, debuts the 2.0-litre Multijet II diesel engine in India. This engine produces 173PS at 3,750rpm and 350Nm from 1,750-2,500rpm, and will be offered with a six-speed manual initially. According to Jeep an automatic variant should be on offer in the year.

The Multijet II is a big improvement over the first gen engine in terms of refinement. It’s significantly quieter and more responsive too. However, it still has some of the old characteristics – a slow revving engine with turbo lag till around 1,800rpm, and then a strong rush of power till the redline. But unlike before power comes in very smoothly rather than aggressively. And despite the lag, it doesn’t struggle to pull at all even when in third gear at around 20kmph. The 6-speed manual gearbox meanwhile is really the highlight here. Gear shifts are smooth, precise and have a slight mechanical clink to it which feels great.

Overall, the engine and gearbox combination make this Jeep a pretty good performer. We managed to get a decent 0-100kmph time of 11.9 seconds, and an efficiency figure of 11.39kmpl in the city and 14.11kmpl on the highway. What’s worth noting, is that this is the 4×4 variant, and we’re not sure when or under what conditions the system is activated. The Compass is primarily a front-wheel driven car with power sent to the rear wheels whenever necessary or when the 4×4 lock is engaged. On the smooth roads of Goa, the Compass’ suspension offered a good compromise between comfort and handling. The Compass gets ‘frequency sensitive damping’ which adjusts the damping rate of the suspension as per road conditions and driver inputs. The SUV is able to keep occupants comfortable over most undulations except when going over sharp lateral bumps. The suspension seems to be tuned for more comfort higher speeds, there is a hint of bounciness – but it never gets uncomfortable. Taking some tight corners also showed how poised the Compass is, there is barely any roll.

The steering unit on the Compass is a revelation. Though it is electrically assisted, it feels well-connected to the front wheels. While there is almost no resistance from the steering system at parking speeds, it weighs up nicely as you pick up speed.A brief drive on the beach also gave us a preview of how effective the ‘Selec Terrain’ system is. Controlled via a rotary knob on the lower centre console, it offers shift-on-the-fly traction modes – including ‘Auto’, ‘Snow’, ‘Sand’ and ‘Mud’. Though the Compass has all-weather tyres, which are generally just enough to cope with varying terrains, the AWD system made sure the Compass felt comfortable on soft sand. The system automatically sent power to the rear wheels when it detected slip and stopped it from digging in.

On a dedicated 3.5km long off-road track, the Jeep Compass felt like it was built to do such stuff. Water wading, steep inclines, slush tracks, slippery grass, wet rocky terrain and a very bumpy log path were all dispatched with minimal effort. We were tackling all these in the ‘Mud’ mode which locks the 4×4 system and disengages traction control. The short first gear compensates for the absence of a crawler gear and there is enough grunt low down the power band that you don’t need to slip the clutch to go over steep obstacles. The responsive steering wheel has to be given another mention here – it had enough feedback for me to know where my front wheels were pointing at, without tiring my arms. The BR-V is Honda’s new small SUV for India. It’s an all-new model but comes built on the same platform as the Honda Brio, Amaze and Mobilio models. In case you are wondering, BR-V expands to ‘Bold Runabout Vehicle’ and Honda has no pretensions in admitting this is a car meant for an urban clientele. Those looking for something with mud-plugging ability had better look elsewhere. Not to say the BR-V is an exception. Rather, it fits right into a market segment where off-road prowess is rarely ever a consideration for buyers. You are probably already familiar with the Hyundai Creta, Maruti S-cross, Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano that the BR-V will take on, so let’s get straight to it and see where and how the Honda hopes to differentiate itself.

The first thing of note is its length. With a length of 4,456mm, the BR-V is the longest of the small SUVs and by quite a margin. For perspective, a Hyundai Creta measures 4,270mm from end-to-end. Second, the BR-V is not immediately identifiable as a Brio, Amaze and Mobilio platform mate, at least when viewed from the front, and that’s a good thing. Does it look like a Mobilio on steroids? Umm, not entirely. The face and the rear look nothing like the Mobilio. However, the side profile, especially that kink in the window line, makes it look awfully similar.The Honda BRV shares its platform with the Amaze compact sedan and the Mobilio MPV. We’re glad it shares just the platform and not the looks. The face looks inspired from the new Accord, incorporating neat elements, such as projector headlamps with LED light guides and a thick double slat chrome grille. We like the finer aspects such as the detailing in the headlamps, the aggressive creases on the bumper and the silver skid plate. All these work well together to give the BR-V a likeable front profile.

The side and the rear are slightly bland in comparison. The 16-inch alloy wheels look great in isolation. However, pair them with the sheer length of the BR-V and it tends to look lost and rather small. We think a set of 17-inch alloys, like the Creta, would’ve filled in the wheel arches beautifully and given the BR-V a more balanced side profile. It gets a healthy dose of creases here as well and does remind one of the Mobilio.The matte-black cladding, flared wheel arches and the roof rails grab a lot of attention. They do their bit to lend the BR-V the rugged appeal that its potential customers want. I for one, love the connected tail-lamps. Look closely and you will find LED light guides in them too.

Honda has played the length card with the BR-V. It is by far the longest vehicle in its class. However, it isn’t as wide. The Honda is 45mm narrower compared to the Creta, and a full 87mm narrower compared to the Duster. While this was a boon in certain narrow bylanes of Udaipur, we wish the car was slightly wider. The added width would have not only liberated more space inside but also contributed to giving it a butch stance. To sum up, the ‘van meets SUV’ design is a mixed bag. It looks great from certain angles, such as the front three-quarters, but ends up looking drab and mini-van like from the rear. Honda has somehow managed to stitch it all together into one neat package.

This is the area where BRV truly scores big. A large cabin with a very good all round visibility makes it a nice place to be in. Our test car was an older version and hence lacked a touch screen with reverse parking sensor making it difficult to slot it in tight parking places while reversing. Even the Bluetooth pairing was a bit cumbersome when compared to similar feature in other modern cars, but thankfully Honda has addressed both these issues in the newer versions.

Honda BR V Gearbox

As expected, the BR-V for India will be available with three powertrain options with power channelled solely to the front wheels. There will not be any all-wheel-drive version. The mainstay of the BR-V range will be the diesel model that comes powered by Honda’s 1.5-litre, i-DTEC engine. While there were indications the engine would be tuned for more power on the BR-V, it continues to make 100hp and 200Nm; same as on the Honda City, Jazz and Mobilio. The other engine of choice will be Honda’s 119hp, 1.5-litre, i-VTEC petrol engine. This engine will be available with both manual and automatic gearbox options. Interestingly, the manual gearbox is a new six-speed unit rather than the five-speed one the petrol City and Mobilio come with. Honda insiders haven’t confirmed if this gearbox will make it to the other Hondas as well, but it’s something to expect in the near future. The BR-V automatic that is likely to interest urban buyers uses a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The CVT-equipped BR-V does feel nice and responsive for city use. Initial responses are good and pottering around town is a smooth and relaxed affair. But press down hard on the accelerator and you get that rubber-band effect CVTs are notorious for. The gearbox has the engine hold revs until speeds build and this also brings out the engine’s noisiest side. The otherwise smooth engine sounds gruff when this happens, and seems especially thrashy close to the 6,500rpm. Drive with moderate throttle inputs and you’ll like the CVT a lot more. Enthusiasts will like the option of the paddle shifters that work without any delay and let you shuffle between the gearbox’s seven ‘steps’. However, due to the characteristics of the CVT setup, you don’t get the same sort of connect you would with a traditional automatic or dual-clutch transmission.

The BR-V’s ride is forgiving and absorbs most of the undulations our roads will ever throw at it. It is stiffly sprung, but not up to the point where the ride becomes jarring. At low speeds, the 210mm of ground clearance and the India-friendly suspension dismiss the potholes and broken roads without a hiccup. The ride is slightly bouncy at the second and third row but is tolerable for shorter journeys.

Handling has been the Japanese carmaker’s forte for long. The steering weight and feel are just about right. It is wonderfully light at low speeds letting you chuck the thing around with a finger. However, the turning radius is gigantic thanks to the length. Taking a U-turn is a task in itself. Other than that, the BR-V is sure-footed and doesn’t mind being thrown around a series of bends. There’s enough feedback that gives you the confidence to push it through the corners as well.

In the last three months Honda BRV travelled with us for a total distance of over 5000 kms. During this period we did not come across any technical glitch barring a minor failure of internal air circulation switch, which got rectified promptly by the local dealership. The BR-V worked with us like a loyal horse without the regular whine and complaints. It returned a very good city mileage and could carry seven occupants with ease offering reasonable comfort even for the third row passenger. Overall we found Honda BR-V to be a sensible and trouble free buy for someone looking for a large family car offering comfort, reliability and a bit of status for the owner.
