Audi Q3 Overview

The Audi Q3 has been around since a lot of years now and while competition has moved ahead, this compact luxury SUV is still on sale and to keep the product line-up fresh, the Ingolstadt-based automaker has given the SUV a minor facelift which brings about small tweaks to the exteriors and interiors while the core of the vehicle remains similar.

Based on the PQ35 platform, the Audi Q3 made its debut in India back in 2012. The diesel model was launched first and then, a year later came the petrol version. Audi currently stands third among the luxury car manufacturers in India in terms of volumes and the Q3 has a very pivotal role to play here.

Audi Q3 Design

The Q3 gets the new Audi family face, and it is the first product to get this look in the Indian car market. The new headlamps are a lot slimmer and with these changes to the headlamps and the front grille the Q3 does look fresh and new. The LED array styling has been changed and the full variant on the Q3 gets LED headlamps, which is the first in its segment. The Q3’s side fairly remains unchanged, except for the new design of the alloy wheels. The rear also doesn’t get a major upgrade, it looks a lot similar to the outgoing version. The Q3 has a lot of design elements similar to the new-generation Q7 that is due to be launched in late 2015. The new entry-level SUV looks and feels a lot more stylish and premium too.

Audi Q3 Cabin

There are no major changes to report in the cabin. The Audi Q3 carries forward with the same neat dashboard and generally user-friendly interior. Quality is up there with more expensive Audis and though the seats are not real leather but leatherette, the ambience inside is what you’d expect in a premium SUV. You sit reasonably high up in a Q3, the front seats are generous in size and support and even the rear seat is spacious enough for two adults to sit in comfort.

With the update, Audi has streamlined the variants on offer. The 30TFSI and 30TDI can only be had in Premium trim while the 35TDI is available in Premium Plus and Technology trim too. What is nice is that even the Premium variants get much wanted goodies like a panoramic sunroof and electrically adjustable front seats. The Premium Plus trim doesn’t get more features but adds in richer aluminium-look inlays. The top-spec Technology variant is pricey but your money does get you paddle shifters, SD card-based navigation, a reverse camera and a colour multi-info display in the instruments binnacle among other features.

The Q3 runs Audi’s MMI infotainment system. It is easy enough to use but the interface doesn’t look as slick as that in the newer Audis and there’s no Android Auto or Apple CarPlay support either. To know more info on Audi Q3 check Kmindia

Audi Q3 Engine

The 2018 Audi Q3 35 TDI continues to draw power from the same 2.0-litre diesel motor that produces 181 HP of power from 3500-4000 RPM and 380 Nm of torque from 1750-3000 RPM. Featuring Audi’s quattro system, the powerplant comes mated to a 7-speed S-Tronic automatic transmission. This oil-burner is supremely refined with good NVH levels but initially, there is some turbo lag. Step on the gas and once past the turbo lag, the engine pulls cleanly and shows off its strong performer characteristics. The gearbox is quick in its responses but sometimes at low speeds the tranny tends to get a bit confused.

The Audi sprints from 0-100 km/hr in a claimed 7.9 seconds while returning an average fuel efficiency of 11-12 km/l. The ARAI-claimed figure is 15.17 km/l. The vehicle comes with Audi’s Drive Select which offers 4 driving modes – Comfort, Dynamic, Individual and Off-Road mode. The modes alter the driving experience and Dynamic makes the car feel very responsive while in Comfort it drives in a relaxed manner. Off-Road is good in well, off-road conditions and it is a pretty capable car.

Audi Q3 Riding

The driving dynamics of the Q3 was certainly one of the best in its segment and it continues to remain the same. The paddle shifts enhance the driving pleasure. The ride is pliant enough and it never feels too stiff or too soft. Audi has been offering the Rough Road package on the Q3. With quattro, the chances to lose grip are also minimal.

Audi Q3 Safety

Audi Q3 is equipped with plenty of braking and safety features for driving control and passenger protection. The primary braking of the wheels is operated by the Ventilated Disc front and Solid disc rear brakes. Moreover, this luxury compact SUV is also equipped with advanced braking features like Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Electric Braking System (EBS), Traction Control and Electronic Stability Programme.

Furthermore, for the first time, the Q3 compact SUV comes equipped by a Hill Decent Control for additional control while driving on terrain conditions. For passenger care and car security, it also comes loaded with features such as Airbags (Driver frontal airbag, Driver side airbag, Front passenger frontal airbag, Front passenger head airbag, Front passenger side airbag and Rear passenger side airbags), Child proof locks, 3-point inertia-reel seat belts for all seats, Seat belt reminder and Side-on collision protection.

Audi Q3 Verdict

Many will argue that for the price of an Audi Q3 you could get yourself a larger, more hardcore SUV. But if it’s a small luxury SUV that you desire, the Q3 is a great buy. Sure, it’s not as spacious or involving to drive as the new BMW X1 or as eye-catching as the Mercedes-Benz GLA but seen as a whole, the Q3 is a very well-rounded package. It looks smart, feels premium and performs well in both petrol and diesel guises. Really, what’s not to like?

The Q3 always was a worthy entry point to Audi’s SUV line-up. The updated Audi Q3 keeps the flag flying high.
