The front fascia is where the majority of the changes have been done. Rather going for the thin chrome grille with body colored slat, the carmaker has given a solid piece of plastic that neatly flows between the headlights and the airdam. The 796cc petrol motor and 5-speed manual gearbox from the old car have been reserved for the facelifted model. This is the same 3-cylinder unit that’s been around for many years and in its latest application, puts out 47bhp at 6,000rpm and 69Nm of torque at 3,500rpm. That doesn’t translate into a rapid, tyre-smoking small car by any means, but the combination fares well where it matters i.e. the daily grind.

There’s considerable torque low down the rev range, so driving in stop/start traffic or overtaking within city limits is not an issue unless the car is fully loaded. The engine is not only suitably torquey in low and mid-range but also very refined – it’s comparatively less noisy under heavy acceleration than the Kwid or the Redi-Go. In fact, the Alto 800’s upper hand in performance was apparent during our small car shootout wherein it was noticeably quicker than the Kwid and the Eon, hitting the 0-100kmph mark in 17.09 seconds and taking just 13.30 seconds in 20-80kmph roll-on in third gear.

For a micro runabout, the electrically-assisted steering is a bit heavy but there’s a lot of feedback to be had. The Alto 800 handles really well for a budget small car, with the steering being decently responsive. As expected, the car requires small yet constant corrections to keep straight at highway speeds but for the most part, the steering is swift enough to feel agile and nicely weighted for that all-important reassuring feel behind the wheel. As for the ride quality, the facelifted model feels just like old car. What this means is that you get a very flat low-speed ride with minimum vertical movements over poor stretches. Make no mistake, the Alto 800 is stiffly sprung and as you up the pace you can sense sharp jolts over bumpy roads.

Maruti’s Alto 800 also rolls quite a bit, and the slim tyres don’t really inspire a whole lot of confidence in one. That aside, the brakes are adequate to get the job done at reasonable speeds with an appropriate amount of feedback. At slower speeds, the ride quality with its stiff suspension setup translates into a lot of vertical movement over undulations, and bumps can be felt and heard with a jerk. Increase the speed and the car tends to ride flatter over slight undulations, but any bumps or potholes can be felt in the cabin with some uncomfortable vertical movement. In fact, driving over a series of small speed breakers (rumblers) without slowing down can get the car displaced from the intended line of motion, and needs extra caution.

The seats of the BMW X6 are simply fantastic, offering terrific support all around. With the luxury package, one can get special comfort seats which have active seat ventilation, heating and lumbar support. The cabin feels rich in every way and there is plenty of space for four adults. Legroom is good and headroom is decent but a fifth passenger just won’t be able to sit because the sloping roof has cabin lights in the centre, thereby comprising on headroom of the fifth passenger. There is a small storage area on each side of the rear seat. The BMW X6 features a 4-zone climate control and also has an LCD screen for rear seat passengers (placed right behind the front arm rest) which plays multiple video formats including AUX and DVD. The doors which have wood, leather and aluminium on them are heavy but you don’t have to take much effort to close them as they have a suction mechanism which pulls them back into closed position.

The iDrive system shows an array of data, including torque distribution on each wheel. There are quite a few cameras including 360-degree view. Off-road cameras are placed on either side of the front bumper, while three cameras are placed on the roof to show what’s around you. There is a reverse camera as well with directional marking which is important as rear visibility is poor due to the small rear windshield. The multimedia system has navigation which is quite accurate. Right below the audio system are buttons for the cameras, traction control, boot opening, etc. The boot opens electronically and shuts down with a touch of a button. There is a charging port inside the boot, probably to power your portable refrigerator. There is good amount of boot space but the sloping roof does compromise on the trunk’s carrying capacity to a certain extent.

BMW offers the X6 in India with a petrol and diesel engine which offer excellent performance. The xDrive50i produces 407 HP of power and 600 Nm of torque from its 4.4-litre V8 unit, enabling it to sprint from 0-100 km/hr in just 5.4 seconds. We drove the xDrive40d variant which uses a 3.0-litre flat-6 unit to output 306 HP and 600 Nm. Performance is urgent with a tap on the accelerator pedal pulling the X6 quite strongly to high speeds. Power delivery is quite linear with turbolag well contained. 0-100 km/hr takes 6.5 seconds with the top speed being limited to 250 km/hr.

Even though the BMW X6 is quite heavy, performance is effortless and the mammoth amount of torque really helps in keeping the X6 on the prowl without losing breath even at high RPMs. Redline comes in at 5100 RPM and this motor is simply smashing when it comes to NVH levels, making a sporty hiss when you whip the throttle. Mated to a 8-speed gearbox, the X6 has quick shifts which can be manually controlled via either the joystick gearlever or the steering mounted paddle shifts. Shifting into Sports mode makes the vehicle even more eager and holds the gears longer. It even blips the throttle on downshifts, making the X6 quite fun to drive. Expect a mileage of 7-8 km/l in the city.

BMW’s are known to be driving machines, the X6’s weight tries to make an exception here. With significant amount of weight under its belly, the X6’s heaviness is felt at high speeds and it has quite a bit of body roll. The vehicle gets bouncy on bad roads and the run flat tyres really don’t help matters much. Surprisingly this BMW has a space saver spare wheel but still BMW has opted for run flat tyres, which do end up spoiling the ride quality to a certain extent. The vehicle is on the stiffer side but still glides on good roads, only to be unsettled on large bumps. High speed stability is excellent and although it’s not as sharp as other BMWs, its still much ahead of its key rivals (from the SUV segment). The steering is a delight and has immense feel and feedback. It isn’t much heavy at low speeds but as you go faster, the steering simply comes into its own, offering a very tactile feel to the drive. Brakes are very sure footed and have terrific stopping power, with the pedal feel being extremely positive. The X6 has good off-road ability and can easily traverse most terrains, thereby offering an splendid balance of good on and off-road driving.

Without doubt, the Volkswagen Polo GT TSI is the best automatic hatchback in our country today. The Polo with the fantastic TSI engine is such a hoot to drive that any petrol-head would want to get one. The car stirred up quite a lot of excitement when it was launched last year and now Volkswagen has given it a minor facelift, in-line with what the other Polo models have received in India. Unlike the diesel powered Polos, the petrol powered GT TSI doesn’t get any mechanical changes and the hot hatch soldiers on with the same powertrain which is as impressive as ever. The Polo GT TSI looks almost identical to the Polo GT TDI. The only difference is the TSI badge on the boot and GT TSI stickers on the C-pillars. The alloy wheels differentiate the GT models from the regular Polo and the performance oriented variants also get black outside rearview mirrors and a black rear spoiler. There is also a GT badge on the right side of the front grille. Compared to the old GT, the new TSI looks fresher thanks to the revised front-end with the addition of chrome elements. Volkswagen is betting big on downsizing the world over and the Polo GT TSI uses one of those engines which are part of this strategy. The 1.2-litre TSI mill is insanely awesome and needs little introduction, we had a gala of a time with our long term Vento TSI. The turbocharged mill thrusts out 105 PS at 5000 RPM and 175 Nm between 1500-4100 RPM, with those kind of torque numbers, the GT TSI puts even bigger petrol engines to shame. Start the engine and you will be spellbound by the NVH or rather the lack of it. The powerplant is so refined, there is absolutely nothing to be heard. In spite of that, the motor is very quick to make progress, it has a fantastic punch in all parts of the powerband – low, mid and top although top-end rush could have been better.

Driving the car in the city is a relaxing ordeal, the motor is quick to respond when you need it and the 7-speed DSG automatic transmission works its magic to keep the vehicle in the right cog at all times. When driven sedately, there is no hint of the forced induced beast which powers the Polo GT but give it the beans and the world transforms. The GT TSI takes off with urgency and hits triple digit speeds in a jiffy. While VW claims a 0-100 km/hr time of 9.7 seconds, the best we could record on our VBOX was 10.09 seconds, putting the GT TSI on par with the GT TDI in terms of outright acceleration. The problem with the GT is that the gearbox won’t let it rev more than 1200 RPM at standstill. Thus when you launch the car, there is some bit of lag which robs crucial milli seconds from the 0-100 km/hr time.

As the above table shows, the GT TSI is faster at the top-end thanks to it having a good punch near the redline which comes in quite early at just under 6000 RPM. Although the tachometer shows redline at 6500 RPM, the GT seldom crosses the 6000 RPM mark with only first gear seeing the motor rev till 6200 RPM. There are three driving modes, D for drive, S for Sports and tiptronic function which let’s you shift gears on your own (there are no paddles!). In D mode the gearbox takes it easy, shifting early and as per throttle inputs, on full throttle it swaps gears at around 5500 RPM while in S mode the motor pulls to around 6000 RPM. In manual mode the gearbox remains in the lowest gear and won’t upshift till redline but if you don’t give full throttle, it won’t downshift. Gears will automatically change in manual mode if you fail to do so.

The 7-speed DSG unit offers slick shifts and shows the urgency you would want from a performance car. The Turbocharged Stratified Injection is itself fast revving and becomes audible post 3000 RPM, creating an addictive note post 4500 RPM. 100 km/hr comes up in third gear and you can comfortably cruise in top gear at 100 km/hr with the tachometer ticking in at just 2100 RPM. The vehicle pulls very quickly to 140 km/hr (it does 150 km/hr in fourth gear) and post that progress is a bit tamed although given the road, the GT TSI will easily top out at 190 km/hr. When you turn on the car, the cluster reminds you to put your foot on the brake to engage gear, in spite of that one can change between N, D and tiptronic without touching the button on the lever. With our heavy foot and redlining day and night, the GT TSI returned a respectable mileage of 9 km/l. Driven sedately, this car will easily give double digit numbers. There is also hill hold which isn’t of much use on an automatic car. The GT TSI is lighter than the GT TDI and is less stiffer too, the softness of the suspension being very noticeable when you hit a bump, the tendency to bounce a bit and leave its line is there. There is less understeer though and ride quality is excellent. The steering is quick but could do with more feedback, more so considering the GT is a performance model. Braking performance is excellent and the car stops dead in its track at any given speed (the hazards turn on when you stand on the brakes). The new Apollo Alnac tyres offer better grip and don’t lose traction as quickly as the Aceleres offered before.

The Indian market has already been flooded with plenty of cars in this particular segment, coming from different auto manufacturers around the world. But our homegrown car maker Tata Motors has gone under the dust in the past few years. The hatchback segment was once stirred by Tata when it launched the original Indica, back in 1998. But with increasing competition, the company just couldn’t keep up to satisfy the customer’s changing needs and priorities.

Initially called the Zica, this new hatchback was soon renamed to Tiago, after the infamous deadly Zika virus breakout. Just like its name, the Tiago hatchback definitely has a sporty and dynamic appearance. What is even more interesting is the fact that Tata used its new ‘IMPACT’ design language to design and fabricate the Tiago. The Tiago bears no resemblance to any other Tata product, which in our books, is a very good thing to begin with. The Bolt and the Vista were plagued by the ‘Indica lookalike’ tag which didn’t go down well with the masses. The hatchback follows Tata’s ‘Impact’ philosophy, just like it’s elder siblings, the Zest and the Bolt. It looks fresh, contemporary and modern. It is amongst the widest cars in the segment at 1647mm, second to only the Grand i10. It has a shorter wheelbase than the Celerio, in spite of being a full 146mm longer. The front profile is home to a pair of swept back, smoked headlamps. Joining the headlamps is a curved strip of chrome that Tata calls the ‘humanity line’.The grille harbours a three-dimensional Tata logo and hexagon detailing that become smaller as they spread out towards the headlamps. The air dam is sleek and is peppered with some more hexagons. The fog lamps are placed at either end of the air dam and get a chrome surround as well. The subtle creases on the bumper complement the ones on the bonnet, thereby lending the Tiago a confident face

We particularly like the sharp character line that runs across the side of the car and finishes into the wrap around tail lamp. As is the norm in the segment, the Tiago gets blacked out B-pillars and indicators on the wing mirror as well.The side shows off the low-slung stance of the car beautifully, with the 14-inch alloys filling the wheel well. However, the design of the alloy itself is a bit of a letdown. In comparison, the diamond cut wheels on the Grand i10 look truly a class above.

The rear profile is clean and minimalistic. The almond-shaped tail lamps and the faint character lines connecting the two look really classy. It also gets an integrated spoiler that houses a high mounted stop lamp.However, the things that drew our attention remain the gloss black spoiler spats that are placed on either end of the integrated spoiler. Tata says that it not only looks cool but also aids aerodynamics. The matte-black finish around the number plate area helps break the monotony of colour at the rear. Notably, the exhaust is neatly tucked away from view. Boot space stands at 240-litres, which is on par with the Celerio for all practical purposes and is slightly smaller than that of the Grand i10.We will go out on a limb and say that the Tiago is the best designed Tata till date. The proportions, the sharp lines and attention to detail are praiseworthy.

The interiors seem to be the biggest surprise Tata has given. The cabin is not only well finished but nicely designed and spacious as well. This makes us think that Tata has really upped the game in the small hatchback class. Right from seat fabric options to the knitted roof lining, everything has been a well thought processed. The dashboard features a soft touch dual tone theme and with uniquely textured interiors and gloss black center console lends the car an upmarket feel.

In terms of feature list and equipment level, yes, Tata has given a lot in this car. The top models feature Bluetooth enabled Harman infotainment system with a USB and Aux-In slot. The music system is powered by 8-speakers and the output is amazing. And despite not a touchscreen high tech infotainment, Tata has added a wonderful feature ‘MapMyIndia’ app for displaying visuals and streaming navigation data right on the infotainment screen. The car also gets four parking sensors.

The two-pod instrument cluster with a crisp display is draped in simple brushed silver colour. The multi-information display gives info on trip distance, average fuel consumption, time and distance to empty. The center console features a pair of AC vents, music system and controls for AC. Another wonderful addition is the Juke Car App which allows simultaneous connection to 10 smartphones via WiFi hotspot. The car beside featuring a cooled glove box has a lot of storage space including 22 cubbyholes, space near the gear lever and pockets on all 4-doors. The Tiago not only brings good looks and premium interiors to the table, but it also promises a zippy ride from its newly developed Revotron 1.2 Litre petrol unit which promises to deliver around 85 PS of peak power at 6000 rpm and 114 Nm of torque at 3500 rpm. While it looks sufficiently powered on papers, real-world performance can not be termed as enthusiastic. Off-the line acceleration is a bit lethargic, but the engine comes to its own once the rpm needle climbs.

The 5-speed gearbox too is a joy to use, and has been aptly tuned to enhance driveability as well as performance. It has been placed at an ergonomic location, and thus falls to hand perfectly. Short and crisp throws ensure that enthusiastic drivers will have a grin on their face every time they slot down a gear.

What is even more interesting is the fact that the Tiago gets the segment’s first Multi drive mode, which includes City and Eco modes to ensure an improved fuel economy as well as superior and fun filled driving experience. It isn’t vague when shoved into a corner and doesn’t feel as light or twitchy like the Grand i10.

The suspension strikes a fair balance between ride and handling. While it is on the firmer side, it doesn’t thud over broken roads or potholes. The suspension setup is better on the petrol Tiago compared to the diesel. Since the diesel engine weighs an extra 20 kilos, Tata has used stiffer front springs and dampers to account for it. Ride quality is acceptable for most parts, and at highway speeds, it does ride relatively flat. It does not bounce around like the Hyundai. The added weight comes in handy here, as the car feels planted at high speeds.

Tata has played smart here as well. The brakes are sourced from Bosch with 9th generation ABS and EBD. The braking power is progressive after a little rev. With the launch of Terrano, a new compact SUV with a touch of premiumness and masculine approach was on offer. The car did well in the Indian car market and satisfied a large number of buyers. After 4 years of gap and the launch of stalwart such as Hyundai Creta in 2015 affected the sales of this hot SUV which let the carmaker to come up with an updated model in 2017. Its 2017 facelift is the first comprehensive update and gets few changes to the exteriors while the interior is the place where it gets the maximum number of changes. The updated model does not feature any mechanical changes.

Nissan Terrano Style

At first glance a very untrained eye might not notice the Renault Duster that this Nissan is based on. And that’s fair given that almost every body panel on the Terrano is new except for the roof and rear quarter panel. The design seems more grown up and sophisticated when compared with the Duster. The front is what sees the most change with a completely new face that’s very in line with Nissan’s family look. The grille is all new and is a larger, more modern iteration of those three piece affairs we’re used to seeing on SUVs like the Patrol. The headlamps are sleeker and more angular but blend well into the grille.

The bonnet is also completely redesigned and features two lines that flow into the grille. Fresh bumpers make for a smarter housing for the fog lamps while the air dam ends in a bash guard in a similar fashion to the Duster. The exaggerated wheel arches from the Duster remain but the Terrano’s sharper visage reduces the overtly muscled impression you get from the Duster. New 16-inch wheels fill those arches quite well and the Terrano boasts high ground clearance that gives it an imposing look. The side profile is perhaps the most reminiscent of the Duster but even here both doors have been redesigned and they get a new line along the base that gives the side a little more definition. The B and C pillars have been blacked out. The rear also gets a thorough make over with more angular tail lamps that fill in those metal blanks much better than the Dusters lamp’s. It’s nice to see that the Nissan has made the rear lamps fully functional and they aren’t simply dummy plastic pieces added onto the sides. The sharp rear design complements the face well.

The cabin of the Terrano attempts a somewhat similar freshening up just like the redesigned exterior. But, the extent of change inside the Terrano is much lower than the outside. However, Nissan engineers have managed to still lift up the overall premiumness of the cabin, though this might be more evident in the top-trim variants. There is a slight variation in the interior colour theme, though the dashboard layout and major elements are mostly carry-forwards. There are a few changes such as the flip open storage box at the top of the centre stack. The combination of circular and rectangular aircon vents and the piano-black finish for the centre stack caught my attention in my test mule.

Faux wood door handles and the chrome bits all around the cabin are other elements that help boost the feeling of quality inside the Terrano. The Nissan Terrano comes with a 1.6 litre petrol engine and a 1.5 litre diesel engine.
